“It was so wonderful to be in a room with people who have worked so hard with you,” said Bruce Revman, New York New Jersey 2026 World Cup Host Committee Co-Host City Manager with LaRusso. “To be able to share this with people who we really wanted to be able to celebrate with and be in that room, it was a career highlight simply because I was able to embrace their spirit and share that with them. It was a very special moment.”
“I had to log into Hulu at the same time I was at the watch party and zoom in on the match schedule to figure it out,” Kansas City 2026 Executive Director Katherine Holland said. “Once I was able to confirm that our six matches included a quarterfinal and we would be able to say we’d be hosting next to Boston, Dallas and Miami, I was elated.”

Gag names (“Hardley Worthit”, “Rob M. Blind”, “Ruth Less”, “Joy Ryder”, “M. T. Pockets”, etc.) were quite frequently used in the games, often to the point where Carmen herself seemed to be the only person without such a name. Clues about the suspect’s next destination often used extended puns (example: “I pumped her for information, but her unrefined answer only suggested a crude plan to visit oil wells near Ahvaz”) or rhyming couplets. Even as the games began to abandon their original formula, this word play was still retained. For example, a news report on massive blackouts from Carmen Sandiego Math Detective quotes an official as saying, “We’re taking a dim view of the situation”.

Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? is an educational video game released by Broderbund on April 23, 1985. It is the first product in the Carmen Sandiego franchise. The game was distributed with The World Almanac and Book of Facts, published by Pharos Books. An enhanced version of the game was released in 1989, which did not have the almanac-based copy protection and instead used disk-based copy protection. A deluxe version was released in 1990, and featured additional animation and a reworked interface from the original version. Some of the bonus features included digitized photos from National Geographic, over 3200 clues, music from the Smithsonian/Folkways Recordings, 20 villains, 60 countries, and 16 maps. CD-ROM versions for MS-DOS and Mac were released in 1992. A Windows version was released in 1994.
The game was initially developed as a menu-driven interface to replace the text-driven interface of adventure games like Colossal Cave Adventure for graphic-enabled computers like the Apple II. Along the way, the idea of introducing geography as part of the game and distributing the Almanac with the game shifted its approach. While it was not intended as an educational game at release, the game proved very successful as an educational tool for schools. By 1995, over four million copies of the game had been sold, and established the Carmen Sandiego franchise. This game is not to be confused with the 1996 rebooted version sometimes mistakenly called the “Deluxe” version.
The intention of this game is to teach astronomy. The player flies in a rocket ship throughout the solar system, interrogating various alien lifeforms in order to solve the theft of an important part of the solar system (e.g. Saturn’s rings). There was only a limited amount of fuel available for travel. So if the player did not ask the right questions on the right planets, or followed the wrong clues, the criminal(s) would get away, leaving the player to start anew with another crime. This version is somewhat similar to Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?. Kneemoi was introduced in this installment.
Although Carmen’s V.I.L.E. gang members were often portrayed as cartoonish buffoons, they seemed to be capable of “stealing” landmarks, cities, national parks, notable cultural exports (such as “stealing all the sushi from Japan”) and the like. Her thieves have also been known to steal geographic features and even nonexistent map features such as the Mason–Dixon line. Some thefts were even non sequiturs based on word play, such as “robbing the banks of the Nile” or plays on the word “steal” such as “stealing the show”.

Another world game
Later in the game’s development, Chahi added laser pistols, including the one that Lester carries for several effects. The idea was influenced by the Star Wars blasters, but added depth to the gameplay by giving the player more options. He also found that repeated laser fire by the enemies helped to enunciate the rhythm of the game. Chahi would later add in the plasma ball that increased the available strategy to players. Several points in the game use elevators or teleporters to move Lester between levels; Chahi had used these instead of stairways, as it was difficult to produce proper animation for these.
Here are the games released during 2024 that have won major industry awards or received nominations for those awards. We’ll update our awards tracker whenever new awards and nominations are announced.
In August 1989, Chahi was impressed by the flat-color animations that the Amiga version of Dragon’s Lair had and thought that it would be possible to use vector outlines to create a similar effect using much less computer storage. After first attempting to write the graphical routines in C, he turned to assembly language. He wrote a polygon routine for the Motorola 68000 on an Atari ST to test his theory, with much success. Later, he found that he could run the code on the Amiga platform and achieve a frame rate of about 20 frames per second, later recognizing this as “a major turning point in the creation of the game” and the point where he knew the polygon approach would work. He was able to take advantage of the Amiga’s genlock capabilities to create rotoscoped animations with the polygons, using video recordings of himself performing various actions. Though he had tried to use smaller polygons (which Chahi called “pixigons”) to construct the backgrounds for the scenes based on Deluxe Paint artwork, the process of creating them was excruciatingly slow, and he returned to using bitmapped images.
Through Interplay Entertainment, the game was ported to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), and the Apple IIGS in 1992, and then for the Sega Genesis (Mega Drive) in 1993. The SNES, 3DO Interactive Multiplayer (3DO) and Apple IIGS ports each contain a prologue before the introduction begins, which consists of an entry that comes from Lester’s diary. The Mega Drive port’s prologue is different from that of the SNES and 3DO ports. The Sega CD version of Another World combines the original game (with CD-quality new music by Freitas) with the sequel, Heart of the Alien, and was released exclusively in North America as Heart of the Alien: Out of This World Parts I and II.
Another World is a cinematic platform action-adventure game designed by Éric Chahi and published by Delphine Software in November 1991. In North America it was published as Out of This World.
